Herman Leonard
A few weeks back, after a rock-jump trip to the the prettyboy reservoir just north of baltimore, we stopped at a barbeque/grill place for some much needed refueling. In the mens room was a poster of ella fitzgerald singing to a crowd which included duke ellington in the front row, and benny goodman in the second. A quick search yeilded the photographer - herman leonard - and his amazing repertoire. Upon emailing these findings to my dad, he took it a step further and made a wallpaper out of Leonards photo of Lester Young's famous pork-pie hat. Lester, a tenor saxophonist - like my father - was infamous for his cherished hat collection and, in particular, the pork-pie; even in the late 40's, a pork-pie was a bit fox-passy. Needless to say, my father also owns and cherishes a collection, replete with a pork-pie.
